I'm liking the clear bases, courtesy of <a href="https://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/epages/950003459.sf/en_GB/?ObjectPath=/Shops/950003459/Categories/Bases__Basing_Material/Clear_TerraBases" target="_blank">Sally 4th</a>. In preparation for my coworkers' heroes breezing through the original HeroQuest system game pack, I'm starting to get the expansion pack monsters ready. (As is obvious from the glacial pace of previous updates, I'm going to have to plan far ahead!)<br />

You'll see some classic HeroQuest ogres, with some minor greenstuff work to make them as close to the illustrations as possible, as well as Golgfag's Mercenary Ogres (the out-of-print metal guys) and even the most recent Games Workshop plastic kit. It might be heresy to some but I have mixed and matched some of the parts to create some unique models. I like variety! The splotchy grey bat on the far left is my son Kieran's first painted mini! Welcome to the hobby, little buddy. :) Knowing I was getting burnt out and that hobby time is at a premium these days, I went the quick route and sprayed them black, then went to town with the drybrushing.<br />

I may still put a glaze or gloss varnish over the black eyes on the spiders to give them some shine, before the matt varnish they looked more "alive."<br />

<br />
Now it's just the four classic WHQ heroes to do and my set will be fully painted! Last step will be to put them all on clear acrylic bases, since I got my order in from <a href="http://wargamesbuildings.co.uk/Clear-Terra-Bases" target="_blank">Sally 4th</a> the other day. They'll allow me to use the minis in a dungeon quest, skirmish, or army battle and still have the bases match the terrain.<br />

The chiropterologists (bat scientists) among you will recognize that some of my bats seem to be suffering from <a href="https://www.whitenosesyndrome.org/about-white-nose-syndrome" target="_blank">white nose syndrome</a>, because what's more horrifying in a dungeon full of nasty creepy-crawlies more than injecting some depressing real-world diseases?<br />

Last update snuck in under the wire... this one's kinda inching along slowly. Looks like the monthly goals on the Warseer Tale of Board Game Painters are getting farther apart too... Bought these skaven clanrats without swords, minus the yellowish guy on the black base. He was already basecoated, and I wanted to preserve the previous owner's work, so I just dipped him in Army Painter strong tone with the rest of 'em once I'd painted them. Stuck with my traditional palette so they'll fit in with the rest of my classic WHQ figures. The new swords are stolen from Dark Elf spear tops. I think they look pretty "stabby" although some are a bit long.<br />

I tried a new technique with the metal and basecoated with Leadbelcher before dipping. I'm thinking now that it's a little dull. I might ultimately decide to add some silver highlights on the edges to scuff 'em up. Either way, trying to avoid the whole drybrushing thing these days.<br />

Guy on the left has a "fiery" shield design stolen from my undead... could be the start of a fun quest if they decide they want it back at some point! White guy behind him has a red shield design with double white cross pinched from Battle Masters. That one will need some dirtying up to reflect typical Skaven defiling. "Smeared with poo" would be a fun experiment. (It's just paint I swear!)<br />

They were quick and dirty, but I still might give the bunch a little more TLC at some point, don't think they're QUITE up to my standards yet.benvoliothefirsthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04949358086099909322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5346689560905591982.post-2322841481212633072017-02-28T17:22:00.001-08:002017-02-28T17:23:30.184-08:00ToBGP February: Gobbos/Snotlings<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Whew! Just snuck 'em in before the February deadline. Click to embiggen. My shields had all gone missing (that's going to be a common thread with these entries, keep your eyes out for the Skaven!) so I improvised. Two are pieces of plastic I cut out of my Plano tackle box, and two are some old putty filler that I "carved" with a knife to look like wood strips. I think it gives 'em a little character.<br />

If I never look at another snotling again, it'll be too soon. You can't see it in the pic but I definitely painted some of their loincloths to look a little "poopy" in the back. I figure these guys aren't too concerned with hygiene, living underground and all.<br />

The boss snotling (bossling?) has an axe I stole from a DnD orc. Forget the name of the board game but I think it's the one with the terrible VHS cassette. Definitely getting the hang of the Army Painter Strong Tone dip at this point. I decided to take the plunge and join the recently-restored (yay!) Warseer.com's Tale of Board Game Painters Project Log. Figured having an expection of a new Warhammer Quest unit each month hanging over my head would help motivate me.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
I'm going for fast and cheap here, so base colors and a painted-on "dip" using Army Painter Strong Tone and I'm done! Apparently I lost a bunch of the shields that come with the game, so I had to dig through my bitz box to find suitable pieces. </div>

I figure everybody's gotta have a pale orc in there somewhere since the Hobbit films came out, right? Mine turned out a little more "smurf" and a little less "white," but oh well. Gave him some blood splashes for color, this is a 90's-themed paintjob, right?<br />

I repositioned the archer's arms just like with the goblins. It was about this time that I had the sudden realization that the things on the ends of the bows are probably just supposed to be a RING of the string, and not actually some sort of CAP like I had previously thought (and painted on the goblins...) Anybody want to vote on which it is? Either way, painting 'em this way is faster, so hey, one less color! SPEED PAINT<br />

I wanted to speed-paint some WHQ figs since I've basically got the entire set to do. Of course, my hobby OCD set in and I just HAD to re-position some of their hats and bows to get a little variety throughout.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I used Army Painter's Strong Tone, but this time painted it on with a brush. It's been forever since I used enamel-based anything, and since I had to thin it with some paint thinner, I managed to scrub some of the base paints off. Now I'm remembering why I switched from the Testor's Enamels all those years ago. Didn't we all?<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I bought Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower the instant pre-orders went up. Haven't had a chance to play the game yet, it'll have to wait for the Holidays, most likely. But the Ogroid Thaumaturge model finally fit the bill as the perfect minotaur that the original game always needed. Just one problem... that ugly ogre head and its improbably large horns!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

You can see the black sharpie "cut line" on the donor's head. I'm not sure what possessed me to switch their arms, but I guess I'm getting a crash course in sculpting musculature... I swear, all the bodybuilder pics on my computer are for research.<br />

The original minotaur's head and gloved hands are in the classic, chunky Warhammer "heroic scale" that made small details so much easier to paint. It's not the most detailed sculpt, but there's a lot of character there.<br />

Size comparison of two original WHQ minotaurs with the head swap started... this was a lot of cutting to make everything fit underneath the ogroid's mohawk, but I think the new head fits pretty well and has a lot of character.<br />

Starting to fill gaps with epoxy putty. I'm planning to make the ears longer. The club and arm got pinned with a paper clip I had laying around... not sure if they make those things out of stainless steel or what, but it fudged my clippers up something fierce... guess I should stick to brass rod.<br />

Roughing in the musculature. I seem to have misplaced my trusty Kneadatite "green stuff" and without the time to run to the hobby store today I'm subbing in some "Kwik Wood" ::snicker:: auto body epoxy putty. It comes in the same tube as the larger portions of green stuff and dries in about a half hour, but it does the trick. And OH BOY does it stink. Won't make THAT mistake again!</div>

<br />
The head is going to need some reshaping, especially in the hair and moustache. But it's a start. I finally know what I'm going to do with that Wight King that has been sitting in the blister pack for a good long while. I'm excited to get started on him!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The furry shoulders are what got me started on this path. They may need some fluffing up with green stuff to get just right. The head is from the Empire Militia kit, if I'm not mistaken.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ur3a-ida2ec/U86TRXj6PKI/AAAAAAAAA1A/mjO7uhJI_aY/s1600/06-IMG_0009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ur3a-ida2ec/U86TRXj6PKI/AAAAAAAAA1A/mjO7uhJI_aY/s1600/06-IMG_0009.JPG" height="190" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
...and when I dip you dip we dip!<br />
<br />
My first attempts at using Army Builder "dip" for speed-shading models. (Above image is the "before" shot!) It seems to go on awfully thick, which may be the result of my using a year-old can. But for a control freak like me, I can easily see the "pools" of shade that have formed on some models becoming a problem. Just look at the tip of the mace/flail of the guy in front. I did actually try to dab it to get some off, but apparently it had already settled a few minutes later. Maybe I can paint it bright red to look like blood. Hmm...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-F3Xu5l0BdBw/U86TSQwJOcI/AAAAAAAAAzc/XbJZFoxHu1U/s1600/11-IMG_0020.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-F3Xu5l0BdBw/U86TSQwJOcI/AAAAAAAAAzc/XbJZFoxHu1U/s1600/11-IMG_0020.JPG" height="328" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Here's another view. We'll see how these guys look with a coat of matt varnish, but I may end up painting the dip on with a brush rather than the traditional method.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zY5Xryqh1Ho/U86TR1i34sI/AAAAAAAAA04/7hCJ0NJkTFE/s1600/09-IMG_0018.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zY5Xryqh1Ho/U86TR1i34sI/AAAAAAAAA04/7hCJ0NJkTFE/s1600/09-IMG_0018.JPG" height="370" width="640" /></a></div>

When I first saw this guy on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/warploqueminiatures" target="_blank">Warploque's site</a>, I knew I had to use him as Sir Bedevere from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. He's just about done, barring some metal details and finishing up the base.</div>

<br /></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I tried to make the bottom of his robe a little dirty with a wash of devlan mud to gribbly him up a bit.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also finally managed to finish HeroQuest's wizard character, which was a lot of fun to do. Pretty slavish devotion to the original card art, but I think he fits in with his formerly completed compatriots well enough.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
And here's Sir Ragnar, as he'll be used in games of HeroQuest, with the four warriors.<br />

I wanted to post some in-progress pics of my Terrorgheist, which Caitlin got me for my birthday last May (!) and finally chastized me about not having STARTED recently. I followed <a href="http://robhawkinshobby.blogspot.com/2013/03/transporting-untransportable.html">Rob Hawkin's tutorial</a> on magnetizing the wings to make him much smaller to transport, and now I'm working on magnetizing his head, rider, and rider's weapons as well. (If you can't tell, I'm really liking this whole magnetizing thing.) I plan on super-gluing the chains around his neck to give the whole thing some support when the wings are detached. They'll be glued in a dynamic, swooping angle to reinforce the sense of movement in the model, which I think is pretty sleek already.</div>

I was stuck on the idea of doing paintjobs for my warriors themed after the four chaos gods. A day of painting later here they are! From left to right, they are: Slaanesh, pink and purple (the most FABULOUSLY frightening!); Nurgle, green and yellow and particularly rusty and corroded; "undivided," with the least alteration, just some rust and brighter silver armor; Khorne, all bronze and red and looking particularly happy about it; and finally Tzeentch, with his particularly bright blue and yellow highlights. I had a lot fun doing these, not least because it let me get out of the "undead drought" of bone and black I find myself doing so much of.</div>

I really wanted to try and expand my horizons as far as rust was concerned with these guys so it would stand up to the scrutiny of Carpe Noctem's <a href="http://www.vampirecounts.net/Thread-Turning-the-World-to-Darkness-Challenge-Krells-Children?pid=384276#pid384276">painting challenge</a>. To that end I tried to layer lots of different colors in the rust including green, purple, white, bone, and finally some blazing orange to top it all off and unify the rust. It was a lot of fun!<br />

I also managed to get some pics of Malus Darkblade, headed for the girlfriend's Dark Elf army. He was originally going to be a Christmas present, but he got pushed back a bit with the trip to Virgina to see my sister. I tried to emulate the color scheme Caitlin is going for with bright red and yellow armor, but the Cold One he's riding was a scheme of my own invention.<br />

<br />
Since he's got such bright armor, I decided to make his sword plain ol' silver to balance him out a bit.<br />

First time painting scales, and more detail than I think I've ever put into a face before. Hopefully the time spent shows! Truly a labor of love. Caitlin says she liked the "lava" bases, so that's the plan for now..<br />
<br />
Finally, I cheated on a couple of "army shots" since I didn't feel like digging all my magnetized models out of the storage bin, but wanted to give readers a quick update since the last ones are so out of date at this point.<br />

Astute readers might recognize some of the half-finished an totally-not-game-legal conversions I attempted several years back with the 5th edition (?) hunchbacked plastic chaos warriors. <a href="http://www.vampirecounts.net/Thread-Turning-the-World-to-Darkness-Challenge-Krells-Children">Carpe Noctem</a> happens to be doing a "Krell's Children" challenge this month, where the goal is to convert some chaos warriors (presumably the CURRENT ones!) into the undead. I thought it'd be the perfect time to revisit my old abortions I MEAN VALIANT ATTEMPTS AT CONVERSION</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GzkWBdiQQzc/UtKwqjK_1eI/AAAAAAAAAj8/ggAZ4Su937k/s1600/IMG_0004.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GzkWBdiQQzc/UtKwqjK_1eI/AAAAAAAAAj8/ggAZ4Su937k/s1600/IMG_0004.JPG" height="550" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The originals were quite honestly a bit of a mess... I tried just mixing up the 5th edition skeleton and chaos warrior sprues to varying effect, but didn't get much in the way of working models. The parts seemed too disparate to blend together well. I also didn't do a particularly good job of figuring out how the parts were supposed to work together, as evinced by the bevor (neck protection) being used as a crotch guard on one of 'em... thank goodness for googling these days. I wanted to make sure the new guys fit onto the game-legal 20mm bases and also roughly matched proportions with the current skeletons, so I've got my 10 most recently finished sword-and-board skellies here to help with sizing. Here's the pile in progress. You can see I sanded the torsos down significantly, which helps to narrow the frame. Hopefully this will also make it possible for them to carry shields and still rank up.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QsHEsxwS5A0/UtKwqLYrCRI/AAAAAAAAAk8/mobEJ21zYJY/s1600/IMG_0002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QsHEsxwS5A0/UtKwqLYrCRI/AAAAAAAAAk8/mobEJ21zYJY/s1600/IMG_0002.JPG" height="374" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I went even further with the mix-and-match approach this time, making sure I broke off legs and arms and attaching skeleton bones between, so that it actually looks like there's a skeleton inside the armor. Hopefully the results seem a bit more like skellies in chaos warrior garb, and less like a mix-n-match.<br />

I wanted to get in a few shots with some of the other varied undead models than I plan to put in the grave guard unit. I really want it to have a mix-n-match look, so you'll see a couple reaper models and one very cool undead dwarf with twin hammers from <a href="http://stonehavenminiatures.webstorepowered.com/Stonehaven-Miniatures-Dwarf-Undead-Miniature/dp/B00AKN3L12?class=quickView&field_availability=-1&field_browse=6202885011&id=Stonehaven+Miniatures+Dwarf+Undead+Miniature&ie=UTF8&refinementHistory=subjectbin%2Cprice%2Csize_name%2Ccollection_name-bin&searchNodeID=6202885011&searchPage=1&searchRank=salesrank&searchSize=12">Stonehaven Miniature's</a> kickstarter hiding in the background.<br />

<br />
I may or may not decide to do a bit more with the colors and give them a "4 gods and 1 undivided" color scheme... the silver drybrushing over black was simple and fast but I feel like it's a bit much for an entire unit.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4Gx9Z6HbISA/UtKwuaiIU8I/AAAAAAAAAks/VBNFL-WxHws/s1600/IMG_0016.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4Gx9Z6HbISA/UtKwuaiIU8I/AAAAAAAAAks/VBNFL-WxHws/s1600/IMG_0016.JPG" height="320" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
In completely unrelated news, I finally finished those Forge World Skaven Wolf Rats that have been on my painting table for about a year... I went for a quick-n-dirty grey palette that will let 'em join my units of Battle Masters wolves as dire wolves. Now I've got about twenty for the glory of the undead! I'm particularly fond of the dirty, bloody bandage look that I think came out pretty well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tm7obn6ZO8Q/UtKwrEZOvoI/AAAAAAAAAjw/3vR-wyg5AwM/s1600/IMG_0005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tm7obn6ZO8Q/UtKwrEZOvoI/AAAAAAAAAjw/3vR-wyg5AwM/s1600/IMG_0005.JPG" height="354" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Since I was going for quick 'n dirty, I basically drybrushed the entire model in progressively lightening shades of gray. I picked out the leather with a light coat of brown, and since it was already shaded from the gray drybrushing, the highlighting was already there. I picked out the bandages with some off-white and then did some gooey reddish black splotches all over 'em. (I figured anyone willing to bandage up a bunch of ravenous wolf rats only wanted 'em to live long enough to fight a battle and wouldn't do a great job of it!) The whole thing was pretty fun, but then, I'm a drybrushing addict. The level of detail on the forgeworld stuff is amazing.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Finally managed to complete a few HQ models. I'm trying to speedpaint my way through these guys but my perfectionist streak keeps surfacing. The fimir were some of my favorite models as a kid and with their resurgence in Storm of Magic and the Warhammer Forge models, I wanted to do the little guys justice. (Apologies for the dark pics!)</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I may have gone a little overboard with the bluish "verdigris" on the bronze areas, but it was my first attempt at the technique. Basically just a light bluish-green wash over gold. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also tried doing something a little different with the bases and painting on some "stone block" patterns of varying size.</div>

Gotta love the "birthmark/brands" on their backs! We'll say someone stuck hot irons into them to keep 'em in their place. What a great sculpt.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm still working on those Warhammer Quest orcs as well as a few other projects. The plain-looking HeroQuest orc in the background is going to be my first attempt at "dipping"... I'm anxious to see how he's gonna turn out.</div>

In the background you can just make out Malus Darkblade's cold one that I'm painting for my girlfriend's Dark Elf army, and another blood dragon vampire on foot in progress.</div>

<br />
The best thing about 3D also has the potential for the most abuse... fast, convoluted action sequences are easier to break down and understand when you’ve got an extra dimension to work with. The fear is that rather than make action scenes clearer and easier to understand (i.e. GOOD FILMMAKING), directors will film those scenes in such a way as to be undecipherable, with the assumption that, “If you can’t make sense out of it, you should’a seen it in IMAX 3D, cheap-ass.” MICHAEL BAY I’M LOOKING AT YOU, BUT I CAN’T TELL IF IT’S REALLY YOU OR NOT BECAUSE OF ALL THE EXPLOSIONS AND DEBRIS FLYING AROUND<br />

It started out at summer camp Mi-Te-Na, and though the cards were banned the first year after they started appearing in the counselor's luggage, the bug had already bitten me. I sold my collection in college for far, FAR less than I had spent over a decade of playing the games, but I'm fortunate that my exhaustive collection of M:TG fiction novels has survived the passage of time.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://wiki.mtgsalvation.com/images/thumb/9/94/The_Brother%E2%80%99s_War.jpg/181px-The_Brother%E2%80%99s_War.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://wiki.mtgsalvation.com/images/thumb/9/94/The_Brother%E2%80%99s_War.jpg/181px-The_Brother%E2%80%99s_War.jpg" /></a>While looking for inspiration for my Warhammer army, I decided to pick up a few of the old novels and see if the background was still as exciting as I remembered. The first was the one that stuck out most to me in the background... The Brother's War. I was pleasantly surprised that the book was just as good, if not better than I remembered. Jeff Grubb does a great job setting up the relationship between the brothers and making it plausible that two people who loved each other so dearly in their youth would end up leading opposing armies against each other. It was interesting to note how little of the book was devoted to the actual war, which seems to take up only a few chapters at the end. Most of the book is spent getting to know the characters and their motivations.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://wiki.mtgsalvation.com/images/thumb/c/cf/The_Thran.jpg/177px-The_Thran.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://wiki.mtgsalvation.com/images/thumb/c/cf/The_Thran.jpg/177px-The_Thran.jpg" /></a>After The Brothers' War, which spent a good bit of time pondering ancient Thran artifacts and the culture that created them, I immediately had to reach for the novel that dealt with that culture, suitably titled "The Thran." I was less impressed with this novel. While it was interesting seeing the birth of Phyrexia and the man who created that artificial plane, Yawgmoth, the novel just didn't seem as enthralling to me. Maybe it's because of the overwhelming theme of politics in the novel, but it didn't seem as exciting to me. The motivations of the character on the cover, Rebbec, also seemed confusing to me, as did the concept of the power stones making people sick. Do they still have that effect? Was it all lies on the part of Yawgmoth? Are the intricacies of pseudo-grecian politics really that fun to read about if you're a twelve year old male in 1995? The answer to the last one is, "probably not." The heavy-handed scheming and persecution themes are interspersed with some big battle scenes which would probably make a good movie, but something about this one left me wanting more. Also, "Yawgmoth" is clearly an evil, evil name... probably oughtta call him something a bit more neutral sounding at the beginning of this novel if you don't want to telegraph that he's eventually going to turn evil. Maybe I'm missing the point.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://wiki.mtgsalvation.com/images/thumb/a/a4/Homelands_cover.jpg/180px-Homelands_cover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://wiki.mtgsalvation.com/images/thumb/a/a4/Homelands_cover.jpg/180px-Homelands_cover.jpg" /></a>A quick trip to the trusty ol' storage space reminded me that I had a couple mid-90's M:TG comic books done by Armada, an Acclaim imprint. (Wait, Acclaim the video game company? They had a comic division? Ah, the 90's.) So I grabbed them and have been trying to crank through them in the past few days, since I have SO MUCH to do lately and I really can't afford another distraction. Anyway the Antiquities War and Fallen Empires series left a bit to be desired. The artwork didn't impress me and the writing didn't hold my interest. Also whoever they got to do the letter was an amateur at best and downright terrible at worst. But I was pleasantly surprised by the Homelands comic. I've been scanning the MTG Salvation wiki lately, looking for connections between different parts of the fiction and trying to keep characters straight, and the site does not have a glowing opinion of the Homelands card set. It is described as a low point in game design for MTG, but a high point of background and storytelling, which seems appropriate given the comic. The brothers Hildebrandt did the cover, which I found interesting, but it's one of my pet peeves that the interior artwork looks nothing like the cover, which I've always found to be false advertising. Fortunately the interior art is by Rebecca Guay, and is PHENOMENAL, if you can get past her particular painterly style. It makes everything sort of mushy and watercolory, but is very beautiful, I think. The writing is also a high point of this one. All of the comics so far have jumped around in time and place, which from reading the editorial notes sounds like a conscious decision to allow Armada to "stake a claim" to all of the various settings in Magic's multiverse. It makes the books feel a bit rushed, as they introduce you to a character, kill them off, then move a hundred years into the future to show the results of said character's demise. While it made the Antiquities War series seem like more of a "highlight reel" of the events that take place in Grubb's "Brothers' War" novel, the Homelands comic seems to be working with a smaller universe and cast of characters that makes the chronological leaps feel more logical. The whole thing has a beginning, middle and end that leaves you wanting more, but there's a feeling of completeness to the story that I found refreshing after the Fallen Empires and Ice Age comics. Did I mention Rebecca Guay's art is FREAKIN' BEAUTIFUL?</div>

<br />
Next up are some greenskins and fimir I'm going to be trying out a couple new and different techniques on... for as long as I can remember I've been a drybrushing addict, but I'm attempting to move away from that. I'm hoping to get my ForgeWorld fimir painted soon but I wanted to see whether I could get some new techniques under my belt before doing so. I'm testing out white vs. black undercoating, and painting highlights rather than drybrushing. I'll also be trying out Army Painter "Dip" washing with their strong tone. I've heard mixed reviews but it'll be a boon to painting all my Battle Masters, that's for sure.<br />

<br />
...and here's my HeroQuest wizard, finally out of the box and getting some color on! I think that when I painted his compatriots I basically chickened out on his "moon and stars" tunic because it seemed so fiddly so he never got the attention he deserved. I finally braved it out and after taking a stab at it I'd say it's pretty passable. Glad he can soon join his companions.<br />
<br />

<br />
Lastly, here's the progress I've made with the Battle Masters chaos knights. They'll join the Blood Dragon in my Blood Knights unit once they're finished. I'm not too proud of the admittedly very simple paint scheme, but as far as getting things quickly I'd say they're a success.<br />

<br />
As an added bonus, here's a few shots of my current painting workspace, complete with box covers for inspiration. Having the tackle box right in front of me keeps all my bitz handy, as well as raising my work surface up high enough to keep my back from hurting too badly.<br />

I was fortunate enough to have some timely inspiration from vampirecounts.net in the form of their monthly "turning the world undead" competition. April's challenge was to convert a necromancer, so I finally had to get this guy finished in time for the April 30th cutoff.<br />
<br />
See <a href="http://wickedmetal.blogspot.com/2013/03/heroquest-zombies-and-tim-wip.html">two posts</a> below for some construction notes. I bulked up the horns with liquid green stuff since then. I'm particularly proud of how the beard/moustache painting worked out, it wouldn't be Tim without the iconic skunk beard. This is also the first time I've tried painting eyes... I was a bit worried but they look pretty good for a first try, I think.<br />

I'm trying to use some of the old Battle Masters Chaos Knights as Blood Knights, both to get more of my existing Battle Masters collection painted and as a way to save money since I don't have the budget for the finecast versions.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I also did some speed painting the last couple days, trying to get the Black Knight kit integrated with the old metal ones. Did some head swaps with the older horses to add a little variety.<br />

WIP<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I was looking for an option to create a "Tim the Enchanter" from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, when I stumbled onto this old fella in my bitz box. I figured by removing his horny crown (hehe!) and building up some ram's horns out of wire I could get the proper look. I also dinged up his robes a bit with a dremel and removed the end of his staff. Can't wait to get some paint on this fella and see how he turns out.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6FN9TJBjWoNv6zcflRj0Y-kjTbpfoqEtNL9ZqIAynAH6I8rnbz20TyCObWUySnP7QfEC_-gMmCrUsNtq22BbSVW2NJ-paMsR-eeOsDyx67KnBKcTpPB-x5wv93cwCglR6JiF0yOf1cSw/s1600/IMG_1650.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi6FN9TJBjWoNv6zcflRj0Y-kjTbpfoqEtNL9ZqIAynAH6I8rnbz20TyCObWUySnP7QfEC_-gMmCrUsNtq22BbSVW2NJ-paMsR-eeOsDyx67KnBKcTpPB-x5wv93cwCglR6JiF0yOf1cSw/s320/IMG_1650.JPG" width="296" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRO7AF-QQNjH-5Ab0YBXqQ7dLUuA6eOVPkou61vByrEDyS3OUt6t0c6K01r3Vxk5ZBUbXGVgelUC4YKYRQt5t-VV3MIgFwMoh6UAp1bOudUwhao9pH6kCjc1aJ0pWHVYI0d15ulKwpCZU/s1600/IMG_1651.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRO7AF-QQNjH-5Ab0YBXqQ7dLUuA6eOVPkou61vByrEDyS3OUt6t0c6K01r3Vxk5ZBUbXGVgelUC4YKYRQt5t-VV3MIgFwMoh6UAp1bOudUwhao9pH6kCjc1aJ0pWHVYI0d15ulKwpCZU/s320/IMG_1651.JPG" width="304" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm also checking a couple quick projects off my to-do list... in making sure I had a complete HeroQuest set I found that I had one zombie left unpainted. I wanted to make sure he looked at least somewhat like the others I'd painted some twenty years ago. The left zombie is one of these historic ones. Got the skin tone a bit too green on my reconstruction but other than that he's pretty close.<br />

It was actually pretty tough trying to speed-paint this guy in 20 minutes but I wanted them to look similar and I figured with no time limit I'd be temped to make him look too pristine. I'm glad to see that watering down my paint added some quick and natural shades and highlights that helped the mini out a bit compared to when I used to just brush right from the pot.</div>

Here's the two speed-painted zombies with another one from chronologically in-between... yes he does look a lot better but he probably took me two or three days of batch painting to get looking that good. I accomplished what I set out to today, which was to (poorly) paint a complete model in a sitting, and I think it was good practice to get back into it.<br />

<br />
SLAMBO!!!!<br />
<br />
I don't know what exactly happened with the management shakeup at GW, but it's like they shuffled all the execs out of the room and asked the one or two hobbyists left, "What are the coolest things we could possibly do with our existing IP that the fans would love," AND I'M FREAKING THE HELL OUT ABOUT IT. ALL IS FORGIVEN GW!!! I TAKE YOU BACK! I TAKE IT ALL BAAAAAACK! #stockholmbenvoliothefirsthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04949358086099909322noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5346689560905591982.post-39056636904453669732012-07-05T11:36:00.000-07:002012-07-05T11:36:22.054-07:00Black Knight<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here's another addition to my army, and an important one at that... the first of my unit of Black Knights from the new boxed set. They may eventually find their parts mixed with the old metal set I have stashed around somewhere, but I certainly appreciate the ease and stability that comes with an all-plastic model. Trying to keep the metal spear arms attached was a royal pain. Trying out a new addition to the color scheme, which up until this point has been purely black and orange... a bit of bluish highlighting to the black cloth areas, to differentiate them from the metal. Right now I think it may be a bit too bright and abrupt... it'll need some tweaking. What do you think?</div>
